Snippets & Scraps Flower Facial Rounds

Welcome to the fourth part of my series - Snippets & Scraps.  If you missed the other three you can find them here: Snippets & Scraps #1, Snippets & Scraps #2 and Snippets & Scraps #3.   It has been so fun to come up with ideas to use cotton yarn scraps!  

I love how these flowers looked paired with one of the other Snippets & Scraps patterns.  Wouldn't it make a cute spa set for a gift or to keep for yourself?  These pretty flowers would also make a fantastic baby washcloth!  I gave one to my granddaughter for her to wash her face and she loves it.  It would also make a pretty coaster.  

Do you use cotton facial rounds/facial scrubbies?  I really like using them in the evening to wash up before bed.  I have a stack in a pretty glass jar in my bathroom.  If you are looking for patterns for other facial rounds, try Herringbone Facial Rounds or Fairy Rings Face Scrubbies

ch = chain

sl-st = slip stitch

dc=double crochet

sc = single crochet

BLO = back loop only

sk = skip

st = stitch

sts = stitches

Notes:

ch 3 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch throughout all patterns.

There are four design options.  

Option 2 and Option 1

Option 1: All one yarn

ch 4, sl-st to join or use magic circle

Round 1: ch 3, 12 dc in circle, sl-st to join (12 sts)

Round 2: ch 3, 2dc in each st, sl-st to join (24 sts)

Round 3: ch 3, 1 dc in same stitch, 2dc in next [1 dc, 2dc in next] repeat around, sl-st to join (36 sts)

Round 4: sl-st in next st, sk 1, 5dc in next, sk 1 [sl-st in next, sk 1 st, 5 dc in next, sk 1 st] repeat around, sl-st to join (45 dc, 9 sl-st)

Option 2: Two yarns - flower center and flower petals

Using yarn A:

ch 4, sl-st to join or use magic circle

Round 1: ch 3, 12 dc in circle, sl-st to join (12 sts)

Round 2: ch 3, 2dc in each st, sl-st to join, secure end and weave in (24 sts)

Using yarn B

Round 3: sl-st to join B, ch 3, 1 dc BLO in same stitch, 2dc BLO  in next [1 dc BLO, 2dc BLO in next]  repeat around, sl-st to join (36 sts)

Round 4: sl-st in next st, sk 1, 5dc in next, sk 1 [sl-st in next, sk 1 st, 5 dc in next, sk 1 st] repeat around, sl-st to join (45 dc, 9 sl-st) 

Option 3 and Option 1

Option 3: Two or three yarns - flower center, flower petals, and outline

Using yarn A:

ch 4, sl-st to join or use magic circle

Snippets & Scraps Series #3 Scrappy Dishcloths

Welcome to the third part in my series of scrappy dishcloths.  If you missed the other two you can find them here: Snippets & Scraps #1 and Snippets & Scraps #2.  This has been my favorite "go-to" scrap yarn pattern over the past 3 years.  For a fun scrappy face scrubby try this pattern: Snippets & Scraps Flower Facial Rounds

Dishcloth & Washcloth Designs.

This pattern is more of a method than an actual pattern, but there are three patterns included below.  Gather up your supplies and follow along with the fun!  This scrap method works for short lengths of yarn.  When you reach the end of one scrap, add your next scrap yarn and continue working.

Snippets and Scraps Series #3 Suzette Stitch

 

Suzette Version:

Use three coordinating yarns

With yarn A

ch 28

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in ch across, ch 1, turn (27 stitches)

Row 2: [sc, & dc in 1st st, sk next st] repeat across, sc in last st, ch 1, turn  (27 stitches)

Change to yarn B, but do not cut yarn A.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

With yarn B

Row 3: repeat row 2

Change to yarn C, but do not cut yarn A.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

With yarn C

Row 4: repeat row 2

Change to yarn A, but do not cut yarn C.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

Continue repeating row 2, changing colors at the end of each row until the cloth is the desired size.

This shows the yarn carried up the side

Lemon Peel Version:

Use 3 coordinating yarns.

With yarn A

ch 29

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in ch across (28 stitches)

Row 2: sc in 1st st, dc in next [sc in next, dc in next] repeat across, hdc in last st (28 stitches)

Change to yarn B, but do not cut yarn A.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

With yarn B

Row 3: repeat row 2

Change to yarn C, but do not cut yarn B.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

With yarn C

Row 4: repeat row 2

Change to yarn A, but do not cut yarn C.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

Continue repeating row 2, changing colors at the end of each row until the cloth is square or the desired size.

Border Option:

The pink striped cloth pictured above has an optional border of sc around with sc-ch-sc at each corner.  

Snippets & Scraps Series #3 Mesh Dishcloth

Mesh Dishcloth Version:

Use 3 coordinating yarns

With yarn A

Chain 28

Row 1: sc in the fourth ch from the hook, (ch 2, skip one ch, sc in next) repeat across row, turn.

Change to yarn B, but do not cut yarn A.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

With yarn B

Row 2: ch 3, sc in the first ch-sp, ch 2 (sc in next ch-sp, ch 2) repeat across row, sc in last ch-sp, turn.

Change to yarn C, but do not cut yarn B.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

With yarn C

Row 3: repeat row 2

Change to yarn A, but do not cut yarn C.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

Continue repeating row 2, changing colors at the end of each row until the cloth is square or the desired size.

Note: On this sample, I used 5 different yarns, adding the next scrap piece when I ran out of the current yarn.  

The General Pattern for Snippets & Scraps Series #3

Use three coordinating yarns

With yarn A 

Foundation chain and row 1 of pattern

Change to yarn B, but do not cut yarn A.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

With yarn B

Row 2: pattern row

Change to yarn C, but do not cut yarn B.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

With yarn C

Row 3 repeat row 2

Change to yarn A, but do not cut yarn B.  Yarn will be carried up the side.

Continue repeating row 2, changing colors at the end of each row until the cloth is square or the desired size.

Tips and Suggestions:

You can use more than 3 yarns if you have smaller scraps to use up.  See the mesh dishcloth for an example.

To change the foundation chain length

• Suzette stitch - start with an even number of chains
• Lemon Peel stitch - start with an odd number of chains
• Mesh stitch - start with an even number of chains

Snippets & Scraps Series #2 Scrappy Dishcloths

Out of all the dishcloths I designed for the Snippets and Scraps Series, the purple one pictured above is my absolute favorite.  It might be that is is my favorite color or that it uses my favorite stitch or it might be that the combination works perfectly together.  I loved it so much I made a second one.  You can see a picture of it at the very bottom of this post.  

Snippets & Scraps Series Number Two has three patterns plus general directions to turn your favorite stitch into a beautiful scrappy dishcloth.  For this series, I used the following stitches: Suzette, Lemon Peel, and Sedge stitch.  All three patterns are below.  In addition, there are instructions to create your own Snippets & Scraps Series #2 version using your favorite stitch and tips to modify the pattern based on the amount of scrap yarn you have.

Repeat the stitch pattern row until the cloth is about 1 inch from desired finished size 

With yarn B

4 rows of single crochet

Tips and Suggestions:

• Increase or decrease the number of single crochet rows based on the amount of scrap yarn you have on hand.
• Use a solid as yarn B and a variegated as yarn A
• Use coordinating solid scraps in place of the variegated yarn
• To change the foundation chain length
• Suzette stitch - start with an even number of chains
• Lemon Peel stitch - start with an odd number of chains
• Sedge Stitch - start with a multiple of 3+2

Snippets & Scraps Series #1 Scrappy Dishcloths

I crochet a lot of dishcloths.  One thing that means is that I end up with a lot of small pieces of leftover cotton yarns.  Periodically I go on a scrap making binge and make what I call "ugly" dishcloths for my own use.  But, I got to thinking this time.  Do they really have to be ugly?  Can't I plan the scrappy dishcloths so that they are pretty?  So I set off on this journey to create some pretty scrap-friendly dishcloths.  I happen to have a lot of variegated yarn scraps, so these are all done with variegated scraps.  You could also use two solid yarns or complete the small stripe with a sold and the main part of the dishcloth with variegated yarn.  

Snippets & Scraps Series Number One has three patterns plus general directions to turn your favorite stitch into a beautiful scrappy dishcloth.  For this first series, I started with three of my favorite stitches: Suzette, Lemon Peel, and Double Lemon Peel.  All three patterns are below.  In addition, I give instructions to create your own Snippets & Scraps Series #1 version using your favorite stitch and tips to modify the pattern based on the amount of scrap yarn you have.

Double Lemon Peel Stripe Dishcloth

Not that long ago I shared the pattern for the Double Lemon Peel Dishcloth.  This is a version of that pattern that includes rows of single crochet to show off the pretty texture of the double lemon peel stitch.  The single crochet rows could be done in a second yarn to really highlight the stripes.  

The cream-colored one pictured above was done with a slightly narrower cotton yarn using a size H hook.  The green variegated pictured below is a slightly thicker cotton yarn so I used a size I crochet hook.  You can see that because of the hook size, I needed a different number of rows to make the dishcloth square.  Review the notes below the pattern to adjust your dishcloth if needed.

• Gauge is not important.  Continue the repeats until your dishcloth is square.
• In the second double lemon peel row the single crochet stitches are above the double crochet stitches and the double crochet stitches are placed above the single crochet stitches.
• To change the size, use a starting chain of a multiple of 4 +1

Pattern Instructions:

ch 29

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in ch across, ch 1, turn (28 stitches)

Row 2:  sc in each st across, ch 1, turn (28 stitches)

Row 3: (Double Lemon Peel) sc in 1st st, sc in next, dc in next, dc in next {sc, sc, dc, dc} repeat across ending with dc, ch 1, turn (28 stitches)

Row 4: repeat row 3 (28 stitches)

Row 5: sc in each st across (28 stitches)

Row 6: repeat row 5

If using H hook:

Rows 7-26: repeat rows 3-6

If using I hook:

Rows 7-22: repeat rows 3-6 

Bind off.  Weave in ends.

If you start with a different number of chains in your foundation row, continue repeating rows 3-6 until your dishcloth is square or desired size.

Fun on the Farm

Who doesn't love farm animals?  This would be cute done as a toddler blanket.  

I'm slowly going through my archived graphghan patterns and sharing those that I think people might like.  It's a good project while I'm spending extra time at home.
