Dolly and Me Ear Warmers

We are a little obsessed at the moment with 18" dolls at my house.  I've been sewing and crocheting for my granddaughter's doll, Petunia.  Right after she got the doll in October, I made matching ear warmers for them.  I just made a second set as a surprise for Christmas.

These are quick to make and a beginner-friendly pattern.  There are notes below the pattern to customize this pattern for any fun stitch.

Dolly & Me Ear Warmers

Supplies:

Yarn - weight 4
Hook size H
Yarn needle
Scissors

Doll Ear Warmer:

Note: ch 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.

Ch 11

Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from the hk, sc across

Row 2: ch 1, turn, hdc in the 1st st, sl-st in next.  Repeat alternating hdc, sl-st across ending with sl-st.

Repeat row 2 until desired length.

Finishing: Join using your preferred method.  I used a sl-st to join the ends.

Child Ear Warmer:

Note: ch 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.

Ch 19

Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from the hk, sc across

Row 2: ch 1, turn, hdc in the 1st st, sl-st in next.

Repeat alternating hdc, sl-st across ending with sl-st.
Repeat row 2 until desired length.

Finishing: Join using your preferred method.  I used a sl-st to join the ends.



Design notes:

• We have a My Life As doll.  The doll ear warmer was 54 rows long. 
• The child-sized ear warmer was 80 rows.  
• Adjust the length of your ear warmer to fit your doll & child. 
• Any fun textured stitch would work for the ear warmers.  
• For the doll, start with 9-12 ch and for the child-size, start with 16-22 chains. 
• Optional: gather the center of the ear warmer using thread.  Add a decorative button or flower.

Herringbone Facial Rounds

Are you looking for a last-minute gift?  These facial rounds take less than 10 minutes each.  You could make a set of seven in under an hour.  It would make a great gift paired with some handmade soap, lotion or other spa items.

We are trying to be more eco-friendly at my house, so I am making items that can be reused instead of thrown away after one use.  These facial rounds are perfect removing make-up, applying toner or washing your face.

These are quick to make since there are only three rounds!  You can get approximately 12 out of one skein of cotton yarn.

I think they are pretty bundled in a set of six to eight, tied with a button and a bow.

Supplies:
Cotton yarn
Size H crochet hook
Yarn needle

Stitches:
ch=chain
dc = double crochet
sl-st = slip stitch
her-dc =  herringbone double crochet

I love the texture of the herringbone double crochet.  It has the height of a double crochet but because of the way it is crocheted, it is attached to the stitches next to it.  This makes a beautiful round with no gaps.

Herringbone Facial Rounds 

Note, ch2 in each round does not count as a stitch.

Ch 4, slip stitch to join.  Or use a magic circle.

Round 1: ch 2, 12 dc into the circle. sl-st to join(12 stitches)

R2: ch 2, 2 her-dc in each stitch, sl-st to join (24 stitches)

R3: ch 2, (2 her-dc in first, 1 her-dc in next) repeat around, sl-st to join(36 stitches)

Bind off and weave in the ends.

Pine Tree Dishcloth Graph

Petunia Purse (18" Doll)

Petunia with her Favorite Purse

I'd like to introduce you to Petunia.  She joined our family this fall.  Since her arrival, I've been sewing and crocheting all sorts of clothing and accessories.  This is my first published crochet design for dolls.  I love how it turned out!

The purse is based on my most popular dishcloth pattern: Dreaming of Spring Dishcloth.  It has a pretty floral center.  Below you will find two options for the purse: one solid color and one three-color version.  I can't decide which I like the best.  I just know that Petunia is going to get purses to match all the fun outfits I've been designing and sewing.  

Please add a comment to let me know if you want to see more doll items!  So far I've designed a "Dolly and Me" crochet ear warmer, a crochet elf hat, two sewn shirt and one sewn skirt.  It's been so fun for me to get back to sewing!   

Supplies:
Sinfonia Mercerized Cotton yarn weight 3, 20 yards. 
Crochet hook size G (4.0 mm)
Scissors
Yarn Needle

Stitches & Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sl-st = slip stitch
dc = double crochet
hdc = half double crochet
sc = single crochet
puff st = 3 double crochet puff stitch
ch-sp = chain space

Puff stitch directions: Yarn over, insert the hook in the stitch, yarn over, draw the yarn through the stitch, yarn over, and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook.  2 loops remain on the hook.  In the same stitch, repeat the preceding step twice. You should have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the yarn through all 4 loops on the hook.  The puff stitch is complete.

Option 1 - Using 1 Color Yarn Throughout

Ch 4, sl-st in the last ch to make a circle.  (or start with a magic circle.)

Row 1: ch 2, 12 dc in circle. sl-st to join.   (12 stitches total)

Row 2: ch2, puff st in same stitch as the ch.  {chain 2, complete one puff st in the next stitch, repeat 11 times} sl-st to join. (12 puff stitches, 24 chains total)

Row 3:sl-st in next st, sl-st into first chain two space.  Chain 2, 3hdc in the chain space.  {4 DC in each chain space, repeat 11 times} Slip stitch to join.  (48 stitches total)

Make 2.  Weave in all the ends on the first.  Do not bind off after completing the last slip stitch on row 3 on the second side.  

Attaching the two sides:
Line up the front and back. sc through one st on both front and back, {sc through st on both front and back, repeat 30 times} (32 sc stitches) 

Make the strap:
ch 33, sc in 2nd ch from hook, {sc in next ch repeat 31 times} (32 stitches on the strap.)

Finishing: 
Single crochet around the opening and attached the strap.
sc in next st, sc around until you reach the other end of the opening.  Sc through strap and final stitch, turn purse, sc through strap and first stitch, sc around, sc through strap and final stitch.  Bind off.  

Option 2: Three Colors of Yarn

Color A: flower center 
Color B: flower petals
Color C: outside edge and strap

Using color A, ch four, sl-st in the last ch to make a circle.  (or start with a magic circle.)

Row 1: ch 2, 12 dc in circle. sl-st to join.   (12 stitches total) 

Switch to color B
Row 2: ch2, puff st in same stitch as the ch.  {chain 2, complete one puff st in the next stitch, repeat 11 times} sl-st to join. (12 puff stitches, 24 chains total)

Switch to color C
Row 3:sl-st in next st, sl-st into first chain two space.  Chain 2, 3hdc in the chain space.  {4 DC in each chain space, repeat 11 times} Slip stitch to join.  (48 stitches total)

Make 2.  Weave in all the ends on the first.  Do not bind off after completing the last slip stitch on row 3 on the second side.  

Attaching the two sides:

Popsicle Pom-Pom Hat

What makes a kid's hat go from boring to fantastic?  Color?  Texture?  Pom-Poms?  This hat has it all!  These bright colors are reminiscent of summer and popsicles bring some playfulness into winter fashion.

I had a daydream about this hat sometime in June but was too busy to experiment with it.   I sketched my idea and then later in the summer I did my test run with the pattern.  I love when everything comes together!  The hat looked even better than I had pictured.  But, I made one big mistake.  The only thing I wrote down about the pattern was this; "First attempt, ch 69."  Not very helpful!  So, just this past week, I recreated the hat.  I learned a good lesson - take better notes!

Popsicle Pom-Pom Hat 

Supplies: 
Crochet hook size I
Stitch marker
200 yards of weight 4 yarn
Yarn needle
2 Pom- Poms

Stitches:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
sl-st = slip stitch

Notes:

• I used Red Heart Super Saver in Polo Stripes to make the hat and the pom-poms
• This hat is crocheted in continuous rounds.
• Be careful not to twist the foundation chain when joining into a circle.
• Sizing: This hat is sized to fit an elementary-aged child.  To resize the hat, use an odd number of chains in the foundation chain.  I like using this hat size chart.  Suggestions for adult size are below the pattern.
• It is important in rows 8 and beyond that each single crochet is placed above a double crochet and each double crochet is placed above a single crochet.  This forms the Lemon Peel stitch.  
• If you end up with an even number of stitches, don't panic!  You can fudge it by doing a dc and sc in the same stitch at the end of row 7.
• The texture in rows 7 and beyond will appear on the backside of the stitches.

Pattern:

Foundation: ch 67, sl-st to join.

Row  1: ch1, sl-st in first ch, place a stitch marker, sl-st in next, sc in all remaining ch (67 stitches)

Row 2: sc in each stitch (67 stitches)

Rows 3-6: repeat row 2 (67 stitches)

Row 7: sc in first {dc in next, sc in next} repeat until the end of the round

Row 8: dc in first {sc in next, dc in next) repeat until the end of the round

Continue alternating rows 7 & 8 until the hat is about 7 1/2" tall.

Finishing the Hat: End the final round straight above the stitch marker.  Fold the hat flat.  Seam the top of the hat using slip stitches.   Add one pom-pom to each corner.

To Make Adult Size: Foundation chain 71, hat height 8 - 8 1/2 inches.

Minnehaha Mesh Scarf

I just love one skein projects.  Don't you?   

I've worn it in public twice.  I had one lady try to buy it right off my neck and a child beg to keep it.  (You just got to love that, huh?)  I can't capture how pretty this is! 

It has a bit of stretch which makes it snuggle right around your neck.  It's so comfy!  It's a perfect accessory for fall outfits or to wear with your winter jacket.

Are you wondering where the name Minnehaha Mesh comes from?  I'm a Minnesota girl.  Minnehaha Falls is one of my favorite places to go.  At the very bottom of this post, you can see one of my pictures of the falls.

Supplies:
Yarn weight 4, 250 yards
Crochet hook size H
Yarn needle

Stitches:
Chain = ch
Single Crochet = sc
Chain Space = ch-sp


Yarn used:  I Love This Yarn Print, Orange Zest
Finished size using 250 Yards is 5 1/2" X 54"

Pattern: Minnehaha Mesh 

Chain 28

Row 1: sc in the fourth ch from the hook, (ch 2, skip one ch, sc in next) repeat across row, turn.

Row 2: ch 3, sc in the first ch-sp, ch 2 (sc in next ch-sp, ch 2) repeat across row, sc in last ch-sp, turn.

Repeat row 2 until the desired length.

To increase or decrease the width, chain any even number.

Flip Flops Graphghan Block

I decided that I have too many projects going right now!  So what did I do over the weekend?  I started another blanket.  #storyofmylife (Insert giggles here!)  I have a few upcoming new crochet designs including a hat, a scarf, a blanket, face scrubbies, and two dishcloths.  They just need to go through the testing and editing process.

Fairy Ring Face Scrubbie

About a week ago, I share the Fairy Rings Dishcloth pattern.  I loved the look of herringbone half double crochet so much in the round that I wanted to try it in another pattern.

One of the things that I strive for is reducing the waste created by my family. As one example, I use old worn-out dishcloths or washcloths in place of paper towels, so I can wash and reuse.

This year, for Christmas, I want to make some spa sets and will be including a set of these face scrubbies.  They are perfect for removing make-up, washing your face or applying toner.  A set of 6-8 will go in each basket.

Fairy Rings Dishcloth

It has been a while since I shared a dishcloth pattern.  This one came about mostly by accident.  I wondered what the herringbone half double stitch would look like in the round and discovered that I really like it!  The hhdc stitches are slightly compacted and raised up, which makes it perfect for scrubbing dishes or washing your face!

In the picture below, you can see that I tried one with the hhdc stitches (the fairy rings!) in a variegated and the dc stitches in cream.  I carried the yarns up the backside - a huge bonus for me since I dislike weaving in ends. I have also made some with just the outside "fairy ring" in a coordinating yarn.

Elephant Stack

Latticed Lullaby Baby Blanket

This blanket has everything that I love in a crochet pattern.  It's quick, it's easy and it's beautiful!  I can't wait for the next baby shower to give it to a little one.

Do you want to hear something crazy?  Just over two years ago, I was afraid to try new stitches but now I just pick up a hook and start crocheting.  Sometimes I have an idea in mind, sometimes I just see what happens.

This project is one that I had been thinking about for a while.  I use this same stitch to make one of my favorite dishcloths.  I wondered how it would look in a bulky yarn as a baby blanket.  It was a successful experiment!  I have another idea in mind for this stitch, so stay tuned!

Below you can see a close up of the beautiful texture in the blanket.  You can also see the results of me goofing around on a day that was too hot to crochet.

Supplies:
Bernat Blanket Yarn - 500 yards,  21 ounces
Crochet hook size N
Yarn Needle

Stitches:
Chain = ch
Single Crochet = sc
Chain Space = ch-sp

Pattern: Latticed Lullaby Baby Blanket

Chain 64

Row 1: sc in the 4th ch from the hook, (ch2, skip one ch, sc in next) repeat across row, turn.

Row 2: ch 3, sc in the 1st ch-sp, ch 2 (sc in next ch-sp, ch 2) repeat across row, sc in last ch-sp, turn.

Repeat row 2 until the desired size.

Finished size:34" x38"

Crocheting in August can be HOT!
